When deciding between a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medicare Supplement, it's important to understand the key differences and how each aligns with your healthcare needs and lifestyle. Both options have nuances that can significantly impact your care and budget, therefore working with a knowledgeable Medicare agent can help you make the most informed and personalized choice.

A Medicare Supplement, or Medigap, is a private insurance policy that helps pay for out-of-pocket costs not covered by Original Medicare, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. These plans work alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and do not include prescription drug coverage.

A Medicare Advantage Plan, also known as Medicare Part C, is an alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans typically include all the benefits of Parts A and B, and often Part D (prescription drug coverage), along with additional benefits like dental, vision, and wellness programs.

Drug plans help cover the cost of medications, making them an essential addition to your healthcare coverage. These plans can significantly reduce out-of-pocket costs and protect you from high drug expenses in the future. Enrolling when you're first eligible can also help you avoid late enrollment penalties.

Navigating Medicare can be complex, with many plan options, coverage rules, and enrollment periods to consider. Expert guidance helps ensure you choose a plan that fits your specific healthcare needs and budget, avoiding costly mistakes or coverage gaps.

Everyone’s healthcare needs, prescriptions, and budgets are different. Tailored guidance ensures you get the right coverage without overpaying or missing essential benefits. As a knowledgeable advisor, I can clarify differences between plans and help you stay informed about any changes in Medicare rules.

Advocacy and ongoing support from a Medicare agent are crucial for resolving issues, understanding benefits, and adjusting coverage as your needs change. As your reliable agent and advocate, I'll ensure you’re not navigating the system alone, providing help long after enrollment.

Medicare agents are paid by insurance companies—not by clients—so you can receive expert guidance and plan comparisons at no cost. Because I'm contracted with most major carriers in Arizona and am not beholden to one specific company, you’ll get honest, unbiased recommendations tailored to your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What steps do I need to take to enroll in an Advantage Plan or Medicare Supplement?

Ensure that you have enrolled in Medicare Part A & Part B.
  • You can Enroll in Medicare Part A & Part B by going online to Social Security (SSA.gov) as early as three months prior to the month of your 65th birthday.
  • Or, call SSA (1-800-772-1213).
  • This is your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP).
Once you’ve completed the enrollment process you can:
  • Determine if you qualify for Part D Extra Help.
  • Determine if you qualify for the Medicare Savings Program.
Contact me (Diana) by calling 520-907-3664 or emailing dianakelley.06@comcast.net.

What if I miss my Initial Enrollment Period?

You can sign up during Medicare’s Open Enrollment Period (January 1–March 31), and your coverage will start July 1st of that year.

How much does Part B cost for 2025?

  • Standard Part B premium in 2025 is $185.00, however it can be higher depending on your income.
  • The high-income threshold (where premiums increase based on income) grew to $106,000 in 2025 if you file an individual tax return or are married and file separately; Otherwise, if you are married and file a joint tax return, the high-income threshold is $212,000.
  • The full Part B Premium chat can be found here.
  • The Part B deductible in 2025 is $257.00.

Do I have to get Medicare Part D (drug) coverage?

No. Medicare drug coverage helps pay for prescription drugs you need. It's optional and offered to everyone with Medicare.

However, even if you don’t take prescription drugs now, you should consider getting Medicare drug coverage. If you decide not to get it when you’re first eligible, and you don’t have other creditable prescription drug coverage (like drug coverage from the VA, TriCare, or an employer or union) or get Extra Help, you’ll likely pay a late enrollment penalty if you join a plan later.

How can I check my Medicare status?

You can check your Medicare status several ways:
  • Log in to your My Social Security account, or
  • Call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213, or
  • Log into your MyMedicare.gov account, if you have your Medicare number.
