Your Medicare Plan Options

When deciding between a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medicare Supplement, it's important to understand the key differences and how each aligns with your healthcare needs and lifestyle. Both options have nuances that can significantly impact your care and budget, therefore working with a knowledgeable Medicare agent can help you make the most informed and personalized choice.

A Medicare Supplement, or Medigap, is a private insurance policy that helps pay for out-of-pocket costs not covered by Original Medicare, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. These plans work alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and do not include prescription drug coverage.

A Medicare Advantage Plan, also known as Medicare Part C, is an alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans typically include all the benefits of Parts A and B, and often Part D (prescription drug coverage), along with additional benefits like dental, vision, and wellness programs.

Drug plans help cover the cost of medications, making them an essential addition to your healthcare coverage. These plans can significantly reduce out-of-pocket costs and protect you from high drug expenses in the future. Enrolling when you're first eligible can also help you avoid late enrollment penalties.

FAQS

What steps do I need to take to enroll in an Advantage Plan or Medicare Supplement?

Ensure that you have enrolled in Medicare Part A & Part B.
  • You can Enroll in Medicare Part A & Part B by going online to Social Security (SSA.gov) as early as three months prior to the month of your 65th birthday.
  • Or, call SSA (1-800-772-1213).
  • This is your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP).
Once you’ve completed the enrollment process you can:
  • Determine if you qualify for Part D Extra Help.
  • Determine if you qualify for the Medicare Savings Program.

Contact
Diana for an in-person appointment by calling 520-907-3664 or emailing dianakelley.06@comcast.net.
Or, contact
Mallory for a virtual appointment at 520-205-1116 or medicarebymallory@gmail.com.

What if I miss my Initial Enrollment Period?

You can sign up during Medicare’s Open Enrollment Period (January 1–March 31), and your coverage will start July 1st of that year.

How much does Part B cost for 2026?

  • Standard Part B premium in 2026 is $202.90, however it can be higher depending on your income.
  • The high-income threshold (where premiums increase based on income) grew to $109,000 in 2026 if you file an individual tax return or are married and file separately; Otherwise, if you are married and file a joint tax return, the high-income threshold is $218,000.
  • The full Part B Premium chat can be found here.
  • The Part B deductible in 2026 is $283.

Do I have to get Medicare Part D (drug) coverage?

No — Part D is optional. However, if you don’t enroll when you’re first eligible and you don’t have "creditable drug coverage" (i.e. through an employer or union health insurance, VA, TRICARE, or certain retiree plans), Medicare may charge a late enrollment penalty that lasts as long as you have Part D.

If you choose a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan, you’ll need to add a stand-alone Part D plan for prescription coverage. Most Medicare Advantage plans already include drug coverage, so you typically won’t need a separate Part D plan.

If you have creditable coverage through an employer, the VA, or another source, you can safely delay Part D; otherwise, enrolling early helps avoid penalties and high out-of-pocket drug costs.

How can I check my Medicare status?

You can check your Medicare status several ways:
  • Log in to your My Social Security account, or
  • Call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213, or
  • Log into your MyMedicare.gov account, if you have your Medicare number.
